Cypherock X1 Review

August 14, 2024

The Cypherock X1 is a premium hardware wallet that takes the complexities out of crypto self custody. Its groundbreaking approach to security enables users to manage multiple portfolios on a single device with ease. It sets itself apart from other card-style wallets by leveraging Shamir’s Secret Sharing which decentralizes your private keys into five different parts that are securely stored in separate, tamper proof hardware devices – four X1 Cards and an X1 Vault. This radically enhances security by eliminating the single point of failure common with other wallets.

With this Cypherock X1 Review, even if one or more of your X1 Cards are compromised, you can still recover your full set of private keys using the backup process. All you need is two of the five parts (which can be comprised of any combination of three X1 Cards and/or the XQ vault) and your PIN code. This feature alone significantly improves security and eliminates a significant vulnerability common to other hardware wallets like Trezor and Ledger.

Moreover, the X1 Cards communicate with the X1 Vault via NFC and are encrypted so attackers would have to physically break the Vault to intercept sensitive information. Additionally, the Vault features a Faraday cage to further shield it from electromagnetic fields which could expose sensitive data in the event of physical theft.

Setting up your Cypherock X1 is simple with the cySync desktop application which guides you through each step in an intuitive and clear manner. The X1 itself has an easy to navigate OLED display and comes with a physical toggle which limits potential user input errors as opposed to a touchscreen. The X1 Vault also features USB-A and USB-C ports to allow it to be used with any computer running cySync.
